WINTER POOL CARE INSTRUCTIONS

Balance Pool Water

Make certain your pool stays in good condition by leaving the water in good condition for the winter. Visit a POOL WORLD store for a water test before closing for the winter.

Store Pool Chemicals away from pool equipment

Put the chemicals in a well ventilated area away from pool ladders, pumps, etc. The chemicals should be sealed in their original containers and stored out of reach of children. This will reduce danger to your children, save the pool equipment, and extend the life of the chemicals.

Test the Sanitizer level Weekly until the water freezes

If the sanitizer is low, add some by mixing the sanitizer in a bucket of water, then pouring it in the deep end of the pool.

Pool can be kept Clean after the Filter is Winterized

Leaf Vacuums use the garden hose for power to clean your pool. They are fast and easily pick-up leaves and other larger debris. A couple of cleanings in the fall makes spring clean-up half the work.

After the Pool Thaws, Test the Sanitizer level Weekly until the pool is started

If the sanitizer is low, add some by mixing the sanitizer in a bucket of water, then pouring it in the deep end of the pool. Be certain to follow the instructions for pre-dissolving any granular materials to be added to the pool.

Some attention to the sanitizer level will keep algae controlled and the water clear. Ignoring the pool, letting algae grow in the pool is far more expensive, more work for you, and harder on your pool finish.

Periodic cleaning in the fall and spring saves you work and time in spring start-up. It is less work to clean up small amounts of debris rather than the big mess in the spring if the pool is left unattended.

Be certain and clean your filters in the fall with the right filter cleaner for your filter. Cleaning it now will keep the filter in good condition, free of oils, and ready for cleaner water in the spring.

WINTERIZING YOUR POOL

Keep your water clear all winter by treating the water now and periodically during the winter. Be certain to visit one of our stores to have them check the water balance before closing the pool. Water balance: pH, Total Alkalinity, Calcium Hardness...... are all important during the winter.

Remove your automatic pool cover. Clean it as you remove it and spray Bio-Guard Stow-away on it while you roll it up the last time. That will keep the cover fresh smelling and will keep it from mildewing.

Vacuum pool and remove all dirt and leaves.

Backwash and clean your pool filter. USE A POOL FILTER CLEANER FOR THIS.

Drain your pool to just below the return line(s.) (Gunite Pools, drain to top of top step)

There are several ways to deal with the Underwater Light. Leaving it in place is probably as good as any. The number of instances where a light is damaged by freezing is so few, it is not worth making much effort. If you leave it in place, there is a small risk of ice movement breaking the lense. If you put it up on the deck, you run the risk of the light being turned on and burnt out during the winter. If you put the light on the deck or sink the light to the bottom of the pool, you run the risk of ice grabbing the cord and ripping it out of the shell. So, leaving it in place is as low a risk option as any.

Drain the filter, pump(s), and heater. (Above ground pools - store pump and filter inside during the winter.)

Blow out all underground plumbing - install rubber expansion plugs to keep water out of pipes.

Remove pressure gauges(s), pump basket, skimmer baskets, inlet fittings, and thermometers and store them inside.

Remove and store Solar Cover inside.

Remove safety line, ladder(s), diving board, and any other items that might be damaged during the winter and store in a safe area.

Put small amount of Pool Anti-freeze in the bottom of the skimmer(s) and leave the remaining anti-freeze in the bottle and put it in the skimmer if the bottle fits.

SOFTSWIM: Top up Softswim (B) to 50 ppm, add Startup algaecide (A) dosage, shock pool with Softswim (C) and Clean Filter with Softswim Filter Cleaner.

CHLORINE: Superchlorinate your pool with 1 lb. of Bio Guard Burn Out per 10,000 gallons.

  • Add 1 quart of Bio Guard Winter Algaecide per 24,000 gallons of pool water.
  • Clean Filter with GLB Filter Cleanse, BioGuard Strip Kwik or Kleen It. BE CERTAIN TO PRE-DISSOLVE ANY GRANULAR MATERIALS TO BE ADDED TO THE POOL.

A Pool Winterizing Kit is available from Pool World

There are two different winter kits available from Pool World.

We carry a Winter Kit designed for pools 12,000 gallons and smaller.

This kit comes with one bottle of Winter Shock and one bottle of Winter Algaecide.

We also carry a Winter Kit for pools that are 24,000 gallons or smaller.

This kit comes with two bottles of Winter Shock and one bottle of Winter Algaecide.

These kits are designed to prevent algae growth during the winter season if they are used according to manufacturers directions and as long as the pool is closed clean.

  • Cover your pool with a strong winter type cover. Pools which can be stained easily must be covered.
  • Store pool chemicals in a well ventilated area away from pool equipment. Chemicals should be sealed and stored in their original container out of reach of children.
  • Check the pool periodically during the winter until it freezes. If it needs sanitizer, predissolve some of your sanitizer in water and pour it around the sides of the pool.
  • Check sanitizer level in the spring and if necessary, add additional sanitizer. If using chlorine, predissolve the chlorine first.
  • You can keep pool clean after the filter is winterized by using a leaf vacuum and garden hose to clean your pool. A couple of cleanings in the fall makes clean-up half the work in the spring. It is much more economical to keep your pool water clear during the winter rather than letting algae grow. The chlorine needed to keep the water clear will cost far less than the tremendous amount of chlorine needed to clear the water in the spring.

Materials needed:
